Ekaterina Andreeva was born in 1961 in Leningrad in the family of historians. She graduated from the State University in 1984 (department of the arts history). Since 1981 she works at the State Russian museum. In 1990 she defended candidate thesis. Since 1986 Ekaterina Andreeva works as curator and critic writing on contemporary art. With the group of friends - art historians graduated from Leningrad University she took part in organizing Club of Art Historians, first independent professional institution in this field of research in Leningrad. With the same team she curated comprehensive retrospective of alternative art in Saint Petersburg ("From Unofficial Art to Perestroika. Art of 1948-1988"). In 1988 Ekaterina Andreeva convinced administration of the Russian museum, where she at that time acted as curator of soviet prints, to start research of the soviet vanguard art of 1960-80es. After the department of contemporary art was established in 1991 in Russian museum she was appointed as senior curator of the new storage for art of 1980-90es. In 1991-1996 she formed important collection of contemporary Russian art from St.Petersburg, Moscow and Ukraine which comprise more than 1000 works of art. In 1993-95 she worked as a member of Contemporary Art Expert-Purchasing Board of the Russian Ministry of Culture and at the same time in 1993 she was employed by Georg Soros Foundation to start programs of Center for the Contemporary Arts in St.Petersburg. While acting as the director of SCCA in 1993-95 she supported two projects: developing of electronic arts, the first; and education in the history of contemporary arts, the second. In 1995 Ekaterina Andreeva initiated program of lectures in the history of art of 1940-90es for students of the University, Academy of arts and other humanitarian institutions. She was invited to lecture at the European University in St.Petersburg in 1999. In 2004 she published book on the history of European and American art of the second half of the XX century which got many positive reviews. In 2005 she defended doctorate thesis at the department of philosophy (Saint Petersburg University). Since 1995 she is member of AICA.
